The 1997/98 season remains among one of the best of all time.

It wasn’t so much for the title race itself, but it had reached a level where it was now more than scraps of paper and handwritten scoring. There was now a fully operational spreadsheet in place, a regular newsletter, a double edition mix tape, and for the first time, two leagues with promotion and relegation. The promotions and relegations were set to happen at the three quarter stages of the campaign.

The season started again with an auction in the Jermy’s St James back garden, with 19 managers in charge of 18 different teams. A new auction record was set when Matthew Jermy paid £10.7m for Alan Shearer.

Ross Peggs started things off on top, and remained so for the next 4 months or so before the usual rise of Lawrence Baynes, who took pole for 5 weeks at Christmas. But something different happened this season, as Ross regained top spot, and then stayed there for the rest of the campaign, ending Baynes’s domination of the nineties. In fact, Lawrence would finish as low as 5th and his first season not as champion. Ross became the 3rd person to get his name of the trophy.

In the SFP Division One, it was the double act of Eli and Fuller who would claim the honour.

In the SFP Cup, Matthew Jermy would face off against Giles Harrison and claimed his first SFP Cup honour with a 14-7 victory.

SFP TAPE

The third of the original SFP tape trilogy was recorded and released in the 1997/98 season. If the Chairman may say so himself, it was the pick of the bunch.

Great song choices, and the addition of a 4 track mixing desk, made for a much smoother production. Chubby Brown's tape recorder was still used for interviews, and a double tape edition was released for the second successive year.

My personal highlight is the first side of Tape B, but I apologise again for some of the finale choices. If I had my time again, the Spice Girls and some of the other wishy washy stuff would not have made it on that final side ...

In the 1997/98 season the league was again supported by a weekly (when possible) newsletter produced by Ross Peggs. Fifteen Men & A Fantasy would turn up on a Friday night at Scouts updating all managers on the latest league positions, cup information and transfer activity.
